Pansy Season

The first flowers of the year

For us, the first true sign of spring is when our pansies & violas pop open & head out to our honor-system trailer. The happy-faced, brightly colored blooms are a great reminder that warmer days & colorful gardens are ahead of us. They’re the perfect thing to hold us over until it’s time to plant summer annuals.

Here are some things you should know before (or after) picking up some of our pansies & violas

  1. They are extremely tolerant! They can handle the ups & downs of spring on Long Island. A 70 degree day followed by an April snow? No problem for pansies.

  2. Extend their lifespan by deadheading spent flowers, this will encourage more blooms & extend the plant’s life. Simply remove spent flowers by pinching the stem of the flower with your thumb & forefinger, no need for any tools.

  3. They can last through part of the summer if in a favorable location - I have had happy violas last until July when in a more shaded area. Once it gets too hot & humid, pansies/violas should be replaced by a more heat tolerant annual.

  4. They’re edible! Give flowers a quick rinse & use them to spruce up any drink or dish. They’re great added atop a salad, cake or frozen in ice cubes.

It’s been a long & gray winter so jump into spring by bringing some color to your beds & containers with pansies & violas. Find ours in front of the farmstand on our honor-system trailer.
